If there were a place specially designed for coach holidays, it would be Wessex. With a wealth of history and heritage, Wessex is a grand location, and not surprisingly, a highly popular holiday destination for visitors who enjoy regular coach holidays to Wessex. The region was an old Anglo-Saxon kingdom before England became one country; making it one of the original seven kingdoms which covered England. Named after the West Saxon, it is situated in the south and southwest of England. Wessex was famously referred to by 19th Century novelist Thomas Hardy when he shared stories set in the majestic region. He was very fond of the old kingdom – he even named his dog ‘Wessex’ after it.
Despite there being Wessex FM, travel on Wessex Trains and services by Wessex Water, you may be surprised to discover that Wessex no longer exists! Despite being established in the 6th Century, the tribal Kingdom of Wessex has changed repeatedly. At its greatest, it stretched from Cornwall to Kent with Winchester at its heart, with King Alfred as the ruler. Today, Wessex serve modern counties as far-ranging as Devon, Gloucestershire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Herefordshire and Hampshire.
