Great Little Trains of Wales

Resort - Llandudno

Overview

Situated on a sandy isthmus between the Great Orme and Little Orme Heads, Llandudno boasts two superb beaches. The shingly North Shore is the busier of the two with its Victorian Pier, boat trips, donkey rides, Punch and Judy shows and much more. The sandy West Shore is quieter with miles of sands and panoramic views of the Snowdonia mountain range in the distance. Llandudno is a highly attractive resort with its magnificent crescent of hotels, broad tree-lined streets and elegant shops all combining to produce a unique atmosphere. There are two golf courses. A tramway and cable car both offer a route to the summit of the Great Orme (which also boasts a superb dry ski slope - one of the best in Britain). There is plenty to do both by day and by night and you are sure never to have a dull moment at what many would claim to be the most complete of all British holiday resorts.

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Caernarfon, Llanberis Lake Railway & Welsh Slate Museum

  • Magnificent Caernarfon is always a delight to visit. The imposing castle dominates the town, but there is more to this town than the castle! There are 14th century walls, a vibrant arts scene and plenty to discover in the historic streets. We then venture into pretty Snowdonia National Park as we make our way to Llanberis where we take a trip on the pretty Llanberis Lake Railway. This pretty journey takes us along the shores Lake Padarn, passing a 13th century castle and crosses what is possibly Britain’s shortest river! We’ll also call in at the interesting Welsh Slate Museum.

Day 3 - Llangollen & Bala Lake Railway

  • We travel over the scenic Horseshoe Pass to reach pretty Llangollen. Spanned by a Grade 1 listed, 16th century bridge, this delightful town has an historic feel in its charming streets and old stone buildings. We then venture into the Snowdonia National Park and take to the tracks of the Bala Lake Railway. Admire the surrounding countryside, keep an eye out for the abundance of wildlife and explore the locomotive sheds and heritage centre.

Day 4 - Day at Leisure

Day 5 - Day at Leisure

Day 6 - Ffestiniog Railway & Betws-y-Coed

  • We take a journey aboard the historic Ffestiniog Railway - the oldest narrow gauge railway in the world. The 13½ mile journey climbs over 700 feet from sea level into the mountains of Snowdonia, passing tranquil pastures, magnificent forests and sparkling lakes. We also visit Betws-y-Coed – a tiny village set at the very heart of Snowdonia National Park surrounded by spectacular scenery.
