Scarborough, Whitby & Yorks Moors Railway

Resort - Scarborough

Overview

Scarborough is arguably the oldest seaside resort in Britain - a Dr Wittie of Scarborough was advocating sea bathing as long ago as 1660, more than a century before it became popular in Regency Brighton! But Scarborough is much older even than this - a cursory glance at the headland which divides Scarborough's two bays reveals the impressive medieval castle. The name Scarborough is a Viking one and the castle grounds conceal the remains of a Roman signal station. The busy harbour is haven to a welter of fishing vessels and there are the usual seaside pursuits a-plenty on the adjacent South Bay promenade which leads to the Spa. The steep hill sides are beautifully landscaped and there are many attractive parks and gardens. The resort is noted for its theatres and there is an art gallery and several small museums.

  • We travel inland along the southern edge of the North York Moors to Pickering with its magnificent 12th century castle. We join the North York Moors Railway, where we settle back in our carriages and enjoy a scenic journey through the enchanting North Yorkshire Moors National Park. We then enjoy some free time in Whitby, famous for its fish and chips and rich history as a whaling port and links to Dracula. Situated on the banks of the River Esk, you can head over the swing bridge and climb the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, or relax on the golden sands of Whitby’s blue flag beach.

Day 5 - Full day to York

  • Today we visit York, a vibrant festival city with Roman roots and a Viking past, offering an adventure for everyone. York boasts a wealth of places to visit including the Roman walls, the famous York Minster, the National Railway Museum and the fascinating Jorvik Viking Centre (entrance fees may apply). You can take a stroll down the Shambles, one of the best preserved medieval streets in Europe, believed to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter films.

Day 6 - Bridlington & Beverley

  • We make our way along the coast to visit Bridlington. The Old Town here dates back to the 12th century and the picturesque streets are still a delight to explore.
