Loch Lomond, The Kelpies & Falkirk Wheel

Resort - Aberfoyle

Overview

Aberfoyle, in the heart of the Trossachs, was once an important slate mining town and is now a picturesque tourism centre with a bustling Main Street. The magnificent surrounding scenery formed by the geological Highland Boundary Fault features in Sir Walter Scott’s The Lady of the Lake. Rob Roy and Mary Queen of Scots both visited Aberfoyle. Later the town was claimed by its most famous resident, the Rev Robert Kirk, to be the gateway to a fairy kingdom.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Full day to The Falkirk Wheel, The Kelpies and Stirling

  • Excursion including a trip on the Falkirk Wheel – the world’s first and only rotating boatlift! The impressive mechanics join the waterways of the Forth & Clyde and Union Canals, lifting vessels 115ft into the air. We continue to call at the impressive Kelpies – the towering twin, equine structures that stand proudly in Helix Park before venturing into Stirling. Discover the charming Old Town, the Victorian arcades or admire the view from Stirling Castle (charges apply).

Day 3 - Full Day Trossachs National Park & Callander

  • Explore the stunning Trossachs National Park, Scotland's first national park. This is where the lowlands meet the highlands and it is an area of varied landscapes encompassing rolling hills, tranquil lochs and rugged mountains. We visit the market town of Callendar and return over Dukes Pass and through the village of Brig o'Turk.

Day 4 - Luss & Loch Lomond Cruise

  • The pretty conservation village of Luss lies on the west banks of mighty Loch Lomond. A settlement since medieval times, much of the current village dates from the 18th and 19th centuries having been developed to house workers from the nearby quarries. Covered in rambling roses, the pretty cottages line the narrow streets that lead down to the waterfront providing magnificent views of the loch and the surrounding hills and mountains. Later in the day we take to the waters itself with an circular cruise to take in the scenery with informative commentary keeping us entertained along the way.

Day 5 - Return Travel

Rob Roy Hotel

Recently refurbished the Rob Roy Hotel, named after legendary folk hero, Rob Roy MacGregor is wonderfully situated at the edge of the Trossachs within Scotland’s first National Park. A short stroll along the banks of the Forth River will take you to the village of Aberfoyle, where you will find a variety of shops selling local arts, crafts and clothing. There are also Visitor Centres in the village.  This traditional Scottish Country Hotel consists of three buildings linked with a covered walk-way. The restaurant offers a varied menu sourced from local produce and suppliers, whilst the Thistle Bar has pleasant ambience in which to relax.
