Highlights of the Scottish Highlands

Resort - Fort William

Overview

Fort William, the “Outdoor Capital of the UK”, is not only an important tourist centre but also a splendid location from which to explore the magnificent Western Highlands. It is situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, on the shores of Loch Linnhe, beneath towering Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. For those who do not feel quite up to the ascent of Ben Nevis, nearby Aonach Mor offers Britain's only alpine cable car, rising over 2000 feet to the Snowgoose restaurant, from where there are spectacular views of the Great Glen. The surrounding countryside has some of Britain’s most spectacular and romantic scenery and its torrid history has produced over 30 battlefields in the Lochaber area alone. As a touring centre, Fort William is unrivalled and our splendid excursion programme makes the best of this with coverage of many of the area's most interesting places.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Glenfinnan & Mallaig

  • We follow the historic Road to the Isles as we make our way to the fishing town of Mallaig. Pass magical Loch Eil along the route as we climb into the hills, before the route descends back to sea-level and tiny islands begin to dot the seascape. The route from Arisaig onwards is arguably the prettiest section of the route with spectacular beaches and views of the sea as it approaches Mallaig. A pleasant circular walk provides great views over the harbour and across to Loch Nevis. Along the way we’ll also stop at Glenfinnan – a magical spot where the towering monument overlooks magnificent Loch Sheil and the towering hills frame the iconic view of the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Day 3 - Day at Leisure

Day 4 - Day at Leisure

Day 5 - Fort Augustus & Loch Ness Cruise

  • A scenic spectacular awaits today as we make our way to Fort Augustus situated at the southern most tip of Loch Ness. Here we take a circular cruise on the mysterious waters to take in the stunning scenery and the entertaining commentary will tell you more about the science, landscape and myths of this vast expanse of water – keep an eye out for Nessie!

Day 6 - Argyll Coast & Oban

  • Today we visit Oban, the ‘gateway to the isles’. Taking the beautiful Argyll Coastal route, we’ll follow the shores of Loch Linnhe, pass isolated Castle Stalker and cross the Connel Bridge to arrive in Oban. The views from the harbour and promenade provide wonderful seascape views that are dotted with islands, with the Isle of Mull lying off the coast in the distance. There are plenty shops and cafes to keep you entertained – you’ll find some of the freshest seafood in the country on offer here – and for the energetic, a walk up to McCaig’s Folly offers spectacular views of the town and surrounding scenery.
