Tenby, St Davids & Gwili Railway

Resort - Tenby

Overview

Tenby is a uniquely attractive resort. Its pastel coloured buildings, narrow streets, fortified walls and the quality of the light from its shimmering bays give it an atmosphere which is reminiscent of the Mediterranean. Its medieval castle was bombarded into submission by Cromwell using artillery on both land and sea and the feeling of a town whose history is much richer than most seaside resorts is very strong as one ambles around the narrow streets or stops for a drink in one of the many bars or cafés. The fifteenth century Tudor Merchants House gives an insight into life when it was a busy trading port. Tenby has four magnificent sandy beaches and a delightful harbour which is always busy with pleasure craft and the regular ferries which serve nearby Caldey Island monastery, a "must" to explore during your stay.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Gwili Railway and Carmarthen

  • One of the most picturesque, preserved railways in the country, the Gwili Railway follows the meandering route of the Gwili Railway on its uphill journey through farmlands and wooded hillsides. Run by a dedicated team of volunteers, they play a big part in recreating the golden age of steam on this nostalgic journey. We also visit Carmarthen – one of the oldest towns in Wales.

Day 3 - Day at Leisure

Day 4 - Picton Castle Gardens & St Davids

  • Surrounding Pembrokeshire's finest stately home and surrounded by some 60 acres of beautiful woodland, Picton Castle Gardens are home to magnificent rhododendrons, an exotic jungle garden and colourful walled garden.
  • Please note: The Welsh Owl Garden & Zoo at Picton Castle Gardens will be closed in 2024 as it is being relocated within the grounds. Unfortunately access will not be possible on our visit and there will be no flying displays.
  • St Davids is technically a city due to its magnificent cathedral, it is actually an attractive village, set amongst beautiful coastal scenery.
  • St Davids Cathedral sits upon the site of an earlier sixth-century monastery built by St David and originates from sometime between 1180 and 1182.

Day 5 - Return Travel
