Loch Ness & Skye

Resort - Fort William

Overview

Fort William, the “Outdoor Capital of the UK”, is not only an important tourist centre but also a splendid location from which to explore the magnificent Western Highlands. It is situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, on the shores of Loch Linnhe, beneath towering Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. For those who do not feel quite up to the ascent of Ben Nevis, nearby Aonach Mor offers Britain's only alpine cable car, rising over 2000 feet to the Snowgoose restaurant, from where there are spectacular views of the Great Glen. The surrounding countryside has some of Britain’s most spectacular and romantic scenery and its torrid history has produced over 30 battlefields in the Lochaber area alone. As a touring centre, Fort William is unrivalled and our splendid excursion programme makes the best of this with coverage of many of the area's most interesting places.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - Loch Ness & Inverness

  • Loch Ness is the second largest loch (by surface area) in the Scottish Highlands, at 23 miles long.
  • It is best known for alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, affectionately as 'Nessie'.
  • The only island on Loch Ness is Cherry Island, visible at its southwestern end, near Fort Augustus.
  • Inverness, translating as 'Mouth of the River Ness', is the capital of the Highlands of Scotland.
  • Inverness Castle dominates the horizon. ‘Macbeth’ was supposedly based in an older castle, since destroyed by the Jacobites.
  • The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (entry fees apply) give a good general overview of the development of the Highlands.

Day 3 - Day at Leisure

  • Today is left free to allow for relaxing in the hotel or exploring the local area.
  • Don't hesitate to enquire with the hotel reception regarding local attractions and travel options.

Day 4 - Isle of Skye

  • Our journey passes Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most recognised castles in Scotland.
  • Broadford is a crofting village dominated by red granite houses where Bonnie Prince Charlie reputedly invented Drambuie.
  • Portree, the capital of the island, is where Bonnie Prince Charlie bade farewell to Flora MacDonald before his exile to France.

Day 5 - Return Travel
