Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - The Northern Peaks, Bakewell & Chatsworth

  • A medieval five-arched bridge spans the River Wye. The Bath House, adjoining Bath Gardens and built in 1697, is fed by warm springs.
  • Traditional and modern version of the Bakewell Pudding / Tart are still made freshly every day in the town.
  • The Old House Museum (entry fees apply) with its 16th century walls of wattle and daub, records local life.
  • Home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and one of the country’s most outstanding stately homes (entrance included in the tour cost).
  • Twenty six of the grandest rooms are open to the public, displaying magnificent paintings - look out for the 64ft long Painted Hall.
  • The 100 acres of gardens were re-laid in 1830 and the village of Edensor was moved from the east of the estate to the west to improve the view!

Day 3 - Matlock Half Day

  • The fast flowing River Derwent made Matlock an early mill town.
  • But it became a famous spa in Victorian times.
  • Today Matlock has attractive parks and architecture and a preserved railway.

Day 4 - Ashbourne & Buxton

  • The delightful market town of Ashbourne has a largely Georgian feel with an attractive cobbled market place.
  • Buxton's attractions include the Devonshire Dome, Europe's largest unsupported dome structure (free entry, subject to Derby University campus opening).
  • The Pump Room is now used by local artists to exhibit and sell their goods and the local Museum has recently been improved and upgraded.
