County Monaghan is one of Ireland’s best kept secrets! Situated in the north of the country, on the border with Northern Ireland, the region is a heady mix of breathtaking rural landscape, serene lakes and picturesque towns and villages.
We are based in the county town of Monaghan itself, which although a modern, lively town also boasts some wonderful architecture, including the award-winning County Museum and St. Macartan’s Cathedral. Monaghan is also the focal point of the county’s furniture industry and is well known for its intricate lace.
The county is rich in literary culture, it being the birthplace of one of Ireland’s most renowned poets Patrick Kavanagh. The area’s past history has left its mark in the numerous Bronze Age megalithic sites and prehistoric remains which can be found at various locations throughout the region.
We use the Hillgrove Hotel, which is situated in its own grounds just a few minutes’ walk from the town centre.
Monaghan’s town centre is made up of three interconnecting squares, known as The Diamond, Church Square and Old Cross Square. There is a large, modern shopping centre, restaurants and bars and an 18 hole golf course.
