Kilkenny, meaning ‘church of Cainnech’, is a flourishing city with a fascinating medieval history and thriving crafts industry. Its past echoes in every footstep throughout the city, from the 800 year old Norman castle which overlooks the ancient streets to the glory of 13th century Canice’s Cathedral and Rothe House, the only example of an early 17th century merchant’s townhouse in Ireland.
It is also a city with a cosmopolitan atmosphere, largely thanks to its lively and diverse cultural scene. With an enviable number of festivals held each year in the city and surrounding area, Kilkenny has become a firm favourite with both young and old.
The county itself is just as rich in heritage and natural beauty, with ancient monuments, churches and priories set amongst breathtaking countryside dotted with traditional Irish villages.
We use the Springhill Court Hotel, a modern hotel which lies within walking distance of Kilkenny city.
Kilkenny has been a thriving merchant centre since the 12th century and its winding streets and ancient lanes offer a magnificent shopping experience, with an impressive collection of boutiques, craft shops and gourmet food stores, as well as international high street brands.
