Overview

Scarborough is arguably the oldest seaside resort in Britain - a Dr Wittie of Scarborough was advocating sea bathing as long ago as 1660, more than a century before it became popular in Regency Brighton! But Scarborough is much older even than this - a cursory glance at the headland which divides Scarborough's two bays reveals the impressive medieval castle. The name Scarborough is a Viking one and the castle grounds conceal the remains of a Roman signal station. The busy harbour is haven to a welter of fishing vessels and there are the usual seaside pursuits a-plenty on the adjacent South Bay promenade which leads to the Spa. The steep hill sides are beautifully landscaped and there are many attractive parks and gardens. The resort is noted for its theatres and there is an art gallery and several small museums.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Outward Travel

Day 2 - North York Moors & Whitby

We pass through Thornton Dale to the pleasant market town of Pickering, where we have a coffee stop.
We pass the natural hollow of the Hole of Horcum, created by a “giant” and Saltersgate Inn, a smugglers’ haunt.
Goathland was the main setting for TV's “Heartbeat”, and its station featured in the Harry Potter films.
Whitby, on the banks of the River Esk, is dominated by the remains of a 13th century Benedictine abbey.
Atop the West Cliff is a monument to Whitby's whaling past - two giant tusks frame the view.
Captain Cook lived here in 1746 and there is an interesting museum explaining his adventures (entry fee applies).

Day 5 - York

York's medieval walls were built by Henry III around 1220. Some stretches can be walked on today (steep stairs).
York's Minster (entry fee applies) is the largest medieval cathedral in England - it took over 250 years to complete.
There are many interesting shops in "The Shambles".

Day 6 - Bridlington & Beverley

Beverley's 13th century Minster is one of England’s finest Gothic churches, with exceptional interior features.
Bar House near North Bar Gate is where Charles 1 stayed in 1642 during the Royalist siege of Hull.
The 14th century St. Mary’s church is well worth a visit, as is Guildhall heritage centre (occasional opening).
Bridlington has an historic old town, long promenade, sandy beach and cliff top walks with views of the trawler port.
The Bayle Museum (occasional opening, small entry fee) is housed in a 12th century gatehouse in the old town.
Recently refurbished, the Spa entertainment centre has a free-to-enter art gallery hosting a variety of exhibitions.

Day 7 - Return Travel

Cumberland Hotel

Very well situated on the South Cliff a few minutes walk from the Spa complex, beach and town centre with excellent views of the town from the north facing rooms. This excellent hotel has recently been extensively refurbished.

Park and Tour

For only £7 per day you can book parking at selected locations for the duration of your holiday. So if you prefer to drive, leave your car and join your coach en-route then why not enquire about our Park and Tour locations. For more information please call our reservations team.

Reliable Coaches

Most of our holidays are operated by our own fleet of mostly modern Mercedes luxury coaches, all of which have an on board washroom and are air conditioned. We also work with selected third party coach operators who supplement our own fleet during peak periods. The facilities on third party coaches can vary, but the majority have air conditioning. We are members of the Confederation of Passenger Transport and the Coach Tourism Association – bodies established to encourage standards of excellence in our industry.
