Heritage Open Days
celebrates England’s fantastic architecture and culture by offering free access to places that are usually closed to the public or normally charge for admission. Open over four days each September.
The Dalesman Steam Train
departs from Yorkshire stations including Wakefield and travels along the Settle to Carlisle railway, England’s most scenic rail journey. Some of the oldest working carriages in operation today are hauled by diesel to Hellifield, where the steam engine takes over for the remainder of the journey to Carlisle.
Wakefield Beer Festival
takes place in June, with around 80 beers and ciders on trial produced by both experimental and established brewers.
is held over 12 days in September, with a wide range of events taking place over the district. The festival is a celebration of reading, writing and poetry and features performances from well known literary personalities.
