Fort William recognised as the “Outdoor Capital of the UK” is a magnet for adventure enthusiasts and lovers of the Scottish Highlands. Although it is a popular destination for tourists keen to tackle the tallest mountain in the UK – Ben Nevis, we have to admit there is so much more to Fort William. It is a location packed full of things to do in all seasons of the year – even if you’re not a thrill seeker! Which is why it is a highly popular destination for tourists who enjoy coach holidays to Fort William. To give you an overall picture of this stunning tourist resort – imagine cheery pubs that offer the finest Scotch Whiskey, daredevil mountain biking that attracts World Cup aficionados each and every year, and whimsical trips aboard the magical steam train that transported Harry Potter to Hogwarts! You see, it really is a one of a kind town.

Things To Do In Fort William

It is a splendid location from which to explore the magnificent Western Highlands. It is situated at the southern end of the Great Glen, of Loch Linnhe, beneath towering Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. For those who do not feel quite up to the ascent of Ben Nevis, nearby, Aonach Mor offers Britain’s only alpine cable car, rising over 2000 feet to the Snowgoose restaurant, from where there are spectacular views of the Great Glen.

The surrounding countryside has some of Britain’s most spectacular scenery and its torrid history has produced over 30 battlefields in the Lochaber are alone. As a touring centre, Fort William is unrivalled, and our excursions make the best of this with coverage of many of the area’s most interesting places.

Excursion Highlights

Inverness & Loch ness

Loch Ness is the second largest loch (by surface area) in the Scottish Highlands, at 23 miles long. It is best known for alleged sightings of the cryptozoological Loch Ness Monster, affectionately as ‘Nessie’. The only island on Loch Ness is Cherry Island, visible at its southwestern end, near Fort Augustus. Inverness, translating as ‘Mouth of the River Ness’, is the capital of the Highlands of Scotland. Inverness Castle dominates the horizon. ‘Macbeth’ was supposedly based in an older castle, since destroyed by the Jacobites. The Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (entry fees apply) give a good general overview of the development of the Highlands.

Edinburgh

Our guide (included in tour cost) joins us in the New Town where we see the Royal Museum, Heriot Row, Charlotte Square and the Georgian House. Across in the Old Town, we descend The Mound, pass the Royal Scottish Academy, cross George IV Bridge to Parliament House and the University. Our tour finishes near the Holyrood Palace and castle, after which we have free time to re-visit points of personal interest.

Isle Of Skye

A scenic journey takes us along Loch Lochy, then past the Five Sisters of Kintail to the much photographed Eilean Donan Castle. We continue to Kyle of Lochalsh and then across to Skye with a short tour of the enchanting island, visiting the villages of Portree, famed for its colourful cottages, and Broadford, nestled below Ben na Calliach.
